Definitions and methodology Target population - people residing in Estonia of eligible age (source: the population register) according to the screening programme policy.
Excluded from screening (cancer diagnosed and/or screening colonoscopy done before the screening programme) - individuals excluded from the screening programme due to the fact that they have been diagnosed with colorectal cancer (ICD-10 codes C18-C20) during their lifetime or a screening colonoscopy has been done within 10 years (120 months) prior to screening.
Invited to colorectal cancer screening - people in target population who have not been diagnosed with colorectal cancer during their lifetime (source: Estonian Cancer Registry and Health Information System, ICD-10 codes C18-C20) and/or a screening colonoscopy has not been done within 10 years (120 months) prior to screening (source: Estonian Health Insurance Fund and Health Information System).
Did not participate in the screening programme - the registry has not received any fecal occult blood test (FOBT) document during the specific screening year.
Participated in the screening programme - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year.
Participated in the screening programme, primary study result negative - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year with a negative result.
Participated in the screening programme, primary study result unknown - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year without a result.
Participated in the screening programme, primary study result positive - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year and the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy).
Did not participate in the additional study - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year and the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy) but no additional study document has been received.
Participated in the additional study - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year, the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy) and the registry has received an additional study document.
Additional study result negative - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year, the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy) and the registry has received an additional study document with a negative result.
Additional study result unkown - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year, the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy) and the registry has received an additional study document without a result.
Detected precancerous conditions - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year and the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy), the result of which is a precancerous condition. A cancer diagnosis from the Estonian Cancer Registry has not been received.
Detected colorectal cancer - the registry has received a FOBT document during the specific screening year and the individual has been referred for an additional study (screening colonoscopy, biopsy). The result of the biopsy confirms cancer or a colorectal cancer diagnosis (ICD-10 codes C18-C20 and D01) from the Estonian Cancer Registry has been received.
Interval cancer – colorectal cancer (ICD-10 codes C18-C20 and D01) diagnosed within 24 months after participating in the screening programme in individuals whose screening result was 'primary study negative', 'primary study unknown' or within 120 months after a screening colonoscopy with a negative result.
Cancer detected among nonparticipants - colorectal cancer (ICD-10 codes C18-C20 and D01) diagnosed during the specific screening year or the following year in individuals who were invited but did not participate in the screening programme.
