Definitions and methodology On 17.06.2026 added data for 'Number of mental patients staying in hospital 365+ days' since 2011.
The dataset provides an overview of mental patients staying in hospital 365+ days and involuntary psychiatric inpatient care in Estonia. The dataset also presents the number of persons treated during the calendar year across categories of involuntary treatment and compulsory psychiatric treatment, including persons hospitalised involuntarily in total, persons whose treatment was continued with court authorisation, and persons subject to court-ordered compulsory psychiatric treatment, as well as, as at the end of the year, the number of inpatients remaining under court-ordered treatment by ward type. Indicators for involuntary hospitalisation follow the regulation on involuntary emergency psychiatric care under the Psychiatric Care Act, and indicators for court-ordered compulsory psychiatric treatment follow the regulation on compulsory psychiatric treatment under the Penal Code. The purpose of collecting and publishing the data is to provide an aggregated overview of the use and burden of psychiatric inpatient care, supporting the planning and evaluation of mental health services and related legal processes. Data source: National Institute for Health Development. The data is collected through the annual report 'Mental and behavioural disorders', submitted in A-veeb, the web-based data collection system, by all licensed providers of psychiatric services employing psychiatrists. Data collection is carried out under the Health Services Organisation Act and the regulation of the Minister of Social Affairs.
