Until 2017, data by the counties is distributed by the administrative division that existed before administrative reform (October 2017). Data starting from 2018 is distributed by new administrative division.

The dataset provides an overview of the 15 most prevalent causes of death in Estonia. The data is presented by sex and last place of residence county. The purpose of collecting these data is to process cause-of-death information to assess population health and to plan prevention activities and policies. Data are submitted by physicians and forensic doctors and are compiled via the X-road data exchange layer from the health information system and the Estonian Population Register and, for perinatal deaths, the pregnancy information system. Data source: Causes of Death Register, National Institute for Health Development.
