The dataset provides an overview of deaths and mortality recorded in Estonia. The data is available both as preliminary monthly registration figures and as annual statistics. The data is presented by underlying cause of death, sex, and age group, and are also presented by last place of residence (county and local municipality). The dataset also includes preliminary death registration data by month and county, as well as statistics on alcohol-attributable deaths, drug-induced deaths, and avoidable mortality (deaths preventable through prevention and amenable to medical care). In addition, the dataset includes infant and perinatal mortality, and autopsy statistics are presented separately.
The purpose of collecting mortality data is the collection and processing of cause-of-death information to assess population health and to plan prevention activities and policies in the social and health sectors. Data source: the Cause of Death Register maintained by the National Institute for Health Development, which contains information on people who died in Estonia and, in certain cases, Estonian residents who died abroad, based on the medical death certificate completed by physician.
