Definitions and methodology Five statements were made to young people that reflect situations in everyday life where one of the potential contact partner may be a person living with HIV:
1) I would stop buying food products from a shop where the shop assistant is HIV-infected
2) I would stop communicating with my acquaintance or friend if he/she contracted HIV
3) I would agree to eat at the same table with an HIV-infected person
4) I would agree to study in the same class with an HIV-infected student
5) A teacher who is infected with HIV may continue to work at school
It was possible to rate the statements on a five-point scale (1 – strongly agree, 2 – somewhat agree, 3 – somewhat disagree, 4 – strongly disagree, 5 – don't know)
In the case of the first two statements, disagreeing responses (‘somewhat disagree’ and ‘strongly disagree’) were considered tolerant, and in the case of the last three statements, agreeing responses (‘somewhat agree’ and ‘strongly agree’) were considered tolerant.
On the basis of five statements, an indicator was calculated that shows the proportion of young people who are tolerant towards people living with HIV. The indicator included young people who gave a tolerant response to all five statements.
The dataset provides an overview of young people’s tolerant attitudes toward people living with HIV in Estonia. Data are presented as distributions by level of tolerance regarding attitudes toward people living with HIV and grouped by school type, grade, age, and selected background characteristics (sex, ethnicity, type of settlement, and region). The dataset enables comparisons between groups and examination of how attitudes are associated with background characteristics. The aim of collecting sexual health data on youth is to support understanding of developmental needs and the planning of health promotion in Estonia.
