Definitions and methodology In order to gain insight into young people’s knowledge of the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, four methods were presented to them for a response: condom, contraceptive pills, interrupted sexual intercourse, and intrauterine device.
The answer could be ‘yes’, ‘no’ or ‘I don't know.’ Of these methods, only condom use can help prevent sexually transmitted infections.
An indicator was calculated which represents the proportion of young people who were able to answer correctly for all four methods at the same time, i.e. who have correct knowledge of methods to prevent sexually transmitted infections.

The dataset provides an overview of young people’s correct knowledge about methods to prevent sexually transmitted infections in Estonia. The data are presented as distributions by a summary indicator of correct knowledge regarding prevention methods and are grouped by school type, grade, age and selected background characteristics (gender, nationality, type of settlement and region). The dataset enables comparisons between groups and examination of associations between correct knowledge and background characteristics. The purpose of collecting sexual health data on Estonian youth is to support understanding of developmental needs and to plan health promotion in Estonia.
