Definitions and methodology The Children of Alcoholics Screening Test* (CAST-6) was used to detect the problem of drinking alcohol among parents (Hodgins DC, Maticka-Tyndale E, el-Guebaly N, et al. The cast-6: development of a short-form of the Children). The test consists of six questions which can be answered ‘yes’ or ‘no’: 1. Have you ever thought that one of your parents had a drinking problem?
2. Did you ever encourage one of your parents to quit drinking?
3. Did you ever argue or fight with a parent when he or she was drinking?
4. Have you ever heard your parents fight when one of them was drunk?
5. Did you ever feel like hiding or emptying a parents' bottle of liquor?
6. Did you ever wish that a parent would stop drinking?
If the respondent answered three or more of the six questions in the affirmative, there may have been a problem with alcohol consumption or dependence on the part of the child’s parents.
The dataset provides an overview of young people’s assessment of their parent(s)’ alcohol use in Estonia. The data are presented as distributions by the assessment of parent(s)’ alcohol use and are grouped by school type, grade, age and selected background characteristics (gender, nationality, type of settlement and region). The dataset enables comparisons between groups and examination of associations between assessments of parent(s)’ alcohol use and background characteristics. The purpose of collecting sexual health data on Estonian youth is to support understanding of developmental needs and to plan health promotion in Estonia.
