Definitions and methodology External causes of injuries registered by health care service providers. Also injuries from previous period that still needed treatment are reflected in one year's data. At the same time, injuries that happen at the end of the year but for which the health insurance claim is received the following year are excluded from the one-year statistics.
The table includes injury cases which have S00-T75 as main diagnosis (according to ICD-10). Cause is unknown if external cause is not registered or there have been registered several external causes belonging to different categories for that case.
Only cases of people whose place of residence according to the population register is Estonia have been taken into account when calculating rates.
Every person is represented once within one category of external causes, regardless of the number of injuries during the year. If one person is injured for various causes, he or she appears in several categories of external causes, but for example on line 'Accidents (V01-X59)' only once.
If the person's sex is unknown then these cases are included only under the corresponding county's 'Men and women' section. If the person's age is unknown then these cases are included only under the corresponding county's 'All age groups' section.
When interpreting the rates, it is also recommended to look at the numbers given in table VIG13. It must be taken into account that in the case of a very small number of injured people or a small population, the rate is significantly affected by random fluctuations. For example, if one child in the age group 0-4 is injured in Hiiu county during the year, then we could see the highest injury rate in Estonia for this county in this age group.
