Definitions and methodology 17.12.2024 updated data for 2015-2023, added data for 2022.
The dataset provides an overview of population burden of disease (Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY)) in Estonia. The data is presented by year, sex, and age group. The indicators are available both as absolute numbers in years and as rates per 1,000 population. Burden of disease is shown separately as years of life lost (YLL) due to premature death and years lived with diseases and injuries (YLD). The purpose of collecting burden of disease data is to provide an overall picture of population health that enables comparisons over time, across population groups and regions, and supports health policy and prevention planning. Burden of disease describes the gap between the best possible and actual health status of a population. Data sources: the calculations are based on treatment claims of Estonian Health Insurance Fund and mortality statistics from the Causes of Death Register; the indicators are calculated and published by the National Institute for Health Development.
