Health Promoting Institutions

DEFINITIONS

Health promotion – development of a way of life and behaviour which promotes and values people's health, as well as a systematic improvement of health-supporting physical and social environment.

Health promoting kindergartens – a movement comprising of kindergartens associated on voluntary basis that implement health promoting kindergarten principles. Estonian health promoting kindergartens movement was initiated in 2000, first kindergartens joined with the movement in 2001.

Health promoting schools – a movement comprising of schools associated on voluntary basis that implement health promoting school principles. Estonian health promoting schools movement was initiated by WHO in 1993.

Health promoting workplaces – a network comprising of workplaces associated on voluntary basis that implement health promoting workplace principles. As for nationwide organisations, only the business that was noted in the network subscription form will be included in the county list. Estonian health promoting workplaces network was initiated in 2005.

Number of institutions joined during a year – number of new institutions who have joined with network in given year.

Cumulative number of institutions joined with the network – number of member institutions since movement initiation.

METHODOLOGY

The purpose of the movements of health-promoting institutions is to promote a healthy lifestyle in kindergartens, schools, hospitals, workplaces and the communities, and to shape a safe and healthy social and physical environment.

If an institution ceases to operate, merges with another under common management, or due to an administrative reform, the county/city in which the institution is located changes, the change is made in the statistical table according to the year in which the institution joined the movement.

CLASSIFICATIONS

Classification of Administrative and Settlement Units of Estonia (EHAK)

This classification is used upon submission of regional statistics. Health promoting schools' data is distributed by the administrative division that existed before administrative reform (valid until October 2017). Health promoting kindergartens' and workplaces' data is distributed by new administrative division, valid from end of 2017. Regional statistics are submitted by 15 counties. Information about Tallinn and Tartu is submitted separately (also about Narva and Pärnu city in case of kindergartens).
