Life expectancy and Healthy life years

DEFINITIONS

Age – the age of the person concerned in full years at the time of the event, i.e. the age at last birthday.

City and town settlement regions – cover settlements where most inhabitants live in regions where population density is greater than 200 inhabitants per km2 and the population figure in a cluster of this density is greater than 5,000.

Disability free life expectancy (Healthy life years) – the average number of years an individual is expected to live free of disability if current patterns of mortality and disability continue to apply.

Ethnic nationality – the data are based on self-determination. The ethnic nationality of the mother is taken as a basis for determining the ethnic nationality of the child.

Life expectancy – the average remaining lifetime in years for persons who attain a given age if mortality remains unchanged. At the age of 0 – the life expectancy at birth (see also the definition of “life table”).

Life table – a numerical model (table of numerical values of age-dependent functions) which measures through interrelated indicators the mortality level in a certain period.

Rural settlement region – covers settlements where population density is lower than 200 inhabitants per km2 or regions with higher population density where the population figure is under 5,000.

Rural settlements – include small towns and villages.

Urban settlements – include cities, cities without municipal status and towns.

METHODOLOGY

Statistics Estonia uses the internationally recommended Sullivan method to calculate disability free life expectancy. The input data for this method include the mean annual population by 5-year sex-age groups; the number of deaths; and the share of people in a healthy condition in these age groups. A healthy condition is defined as one without health-related limitations in daily activities. Population health data were taken from the annual Estonian Social Survey (ESS).
